INTERMET INVESTMENT AT MONROE CITY DIE CAST FACILITY
BROADENS POSSIBILITES FOR ZINC COMPONENTS

FT. WORTH, Texas – June 9, 2008 – Intermet Corporation has taken its production of zinc components to the next level with the addition of a new state-of-the-art 88 NTX Techmire zinc die casting machine at its Monroe City, Mo. plant, providing greater responsiveness and higher quality benefits to its customers.

"The machine has quick die change features and is equipped with the ability to provide process monitoring and control not available in conventional-type machines," said Mark Utterback, Intermet manufacturing engineering manager at Monroe City.

With the new machine, die changes now take just 15 to 20 minutes, instead of two to three hours. "That gives us the capability to respond more quickly to fluctuations in orders," Utterback said. “It also cuts down on zinc scrap and reduces variations in production quality due to the enhanced capabilities of the machine,” he added.

Improved monitoring also allows a quicker response to potential problems. The NTX machine has a heavy duty, rigid, clamping system that makes it possible to use high metal pressures and injection velocities. That in turn improves surface quality and part density. The density is a key factor related to the strength and durability of a cast part.

The machine produces more cosmetic zinc components as well. For example, it can improve the finish to a part's surface. "All in all, it gives our customers options and allows us to be more competitive in the zinc die casting market," Utterback said.

The new equipment will initially produce precision components for steering mechanisms and the company expects to soon be adding others.

“We’re really excited by the capabilities and efficiency this new equipment brings and we are delighted to increase the level of service we provide to our customers,” said Utterback.
