Background

INTERMET Corporation traces its roots through its Columbus Foundry located in Columbus, Georgia. It was founded in 1846 as Columbus Iron Works, which makes it one of the oldest chartered companies in the United States.

Today, INTERMET is one of the largest independent metal-casting companies in the world, with nearly 2,500 employees who design, manufacture, and machine precision aluminum, iron, magnesium and zinc castings for the automotive and industrial markets.

Currently, INTERMET owns and operates four ferrous-metal foundries, seven aluminum, magnesium and zinc die-casting plants and a research foundry with a total straight-time molding capacity of about 700,000 tons per year.

INTERMET provides value-added services through several plant-based design and engineering operations.

INTERMET takes a proactive approach to product design and engineering. That approach is what differentiates the company from the rest of the foundry industry. Interface with the customers occurs very early in the component design process.

Acting as a full partner in the development team, INTERMET can suggest alternatives in design, methods of production and materials, ensuring that a part will "fit the function" and be optimally configured for each assembly.

Total revenues reported for 2004 were $837 million. After emerging from bankruptcy protection on November 9, 2005, INTERMET became a private company. The company is headquartered in Fort Worth, Texas.
